El Calafate y El Chalten

 Just before the kids went back to school we took a trip with James' parents to El Calafate. I knew I would like this place, but I didn't know just how much I would like it. It was absolutely incredible. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking here: 

Lago Argentino

We took a tour of some ancient cave paintings then had dinner in this cave. It was cold, but unique and fun! 




The next day we set out to find some glaciers. But first, fed this very loud lamb.

There are a bunch of icebergs in the lake having fallen off of the glaciers. This one was particularly large. 

The next day we boarded this boat to go find more glaciers. 






There could not be a more appropriate character comparison...

And the most picturesque place for Charlotte to get her horse fix in. 


We went to church in Calafate. The meetinghoue was being remodled so they were holding church at this indoor plaground. It was a struggle for Imogen and Wesley to stay reverent sitting right next to the play structure. 


We headed a few hours north to el Chalten. Grant and Susan were incredibly gracious and watched Imogen and Wesley while James and I took Charlotte and Jack on a hike up to an amazing view of Fitz Roy. It's the first time in a very long time I've been able to go on a good wear-your-body-to-the-ground hike. And it was so worth it!

Our Ian boy was left behind with a babysitter on this trip because his mobility is getting in the way. He has officially started WALKING and loves to diligently practice every day. As well as climb perilous staircases. We missed him like crazy....but it also actually felt like a vacation not needing to save him from self destruction constantly.

The Forces Against Us

After far too many attempts to sit down and explain what has happened to us in the past six months, I'll spare my loved ones the bore and mostly just post pictures. The long and short of it is that James transferred down to Buenos Aires with Microsoft for two (maybe three) years. We moved just after Christmas and are expecting baby #5 the end of February. We've used the word "crazy" a lot recently.  Trying to leave Washington was a bit of a struggle. This was the day we learned someone in my family had COVID thus canceling any Christmas plans to get together with family before we took off :( Also any help I was going to get from them....sigh... The day after Christmas it snowed, putting a wrench in the packing plans. Movers were supposed to come pack us up, but they were told not to come to work to avoid bad roads. Our renters were moving in that week and were as accommodating as they could be, but we ended up moving out as they were moving in. It was a wild few day

How the Cards Have Fallen

 Before anything else, I just want to remind everyone I'm due to have a baby in 17 days.  James' grandfather has always encouraged us to get a dog to protect our family. I've been told that at one point their family was living in Central America and someone was stealing laundry from their back yard. They got a German Shephard and fixed the problem. Living in Duvall, we never lived in fear of intrusion. It has frequently been rated the #1 safest city in Washington, so no dog for us. I'm not really a dog person anyway. Other people's dogs are fine, but I have zero interest in taking care of a dog. Especially in light of above mentioned status.  A few weeks ago, James and I were up late working on incredibly boring stuff when he gets a call from the neighbor next door. The neighbor told James there were robbers hiding in our backyard. Apparently, they had robbed the condo next door and jumped the wall between the two properties. January Photo Update

We've almost made it a whole month living in Argentina. January has been full of learning, trying, trying again, and really loving where we are. The kids start school this Wednesday and we are excited to really dig into this new life.  This is Rio de la Plata. We can walk to it in less than five minutes from our house. We have some really incredible views from the house out to the river that I hope we never get used to. There are almost always sailboats out there, and frequently a cargo ship. The river is pretty brown, despite being named "the river of silver" and it has a smell that will keep my kids out of it, but it's a pretty place to walk to and has nice trails and parks along this stretch.  This was a different day we went down to the river.
